What came first...The Chicken or the Egg?

Well, in our house, it was the chicken-rotisserie to be exact. Then, today, Maddie ate scrambled egg. She LOVED it and was irritated that after she swallowed, it took me too long to put more in her plate! She's crazy, but I love her. Last night scared me a little. Gabe and I were watching TV in bed and it was around 10pm. All of the sudden, Maddie was screaming. It freaked me out. I went to her and she still seemed out of it, so I knew she'd had a bad dream. I was really hoping she wouldn't get that trait that I seem to have; but it looks like she might have. I held her, changed her and offered her food and she went right back down to sleep. I was so sad for her. It made me realize how much I NEVER want anything bad to happen to her. I never want her to be sad, scared, alone, unsure, hurt... the list goes on. But, then I thought, that's part of life. You know? Having bad dreams and waking to find that they aren't real. Or, being alone and learning that that feeling is not scary and actually really peaceful. That's a hard spot for a mom. Wanting to protect, but also wanting them to experience so that they learn things for themselves. I know, I know, she's only 9 months old-but what else am I supposed to think about? We are off to Gymboree. Haven 't been in over 2 weeks because of the trip to Idaho. If you want to participate...the question for today is: As a mom, what do you worry most about in terms of your children (grown or small)?

Hi babe - wow, what am I most afraid about for my babes now that you are all grown? It's funny, sweetheart. I absolutely understand how you feel about Maddie and how you don't want her to ever hurt. That's a hard thing for most of us to deal with for our kids because we can't always do something to change whatever is going on. Today I don't worry about specific things happening to each of you - more that I am hopeful you are living the lives you each want and that you are finding joy and happiness in your lives. As we age, (and you all know how old I am) we really do realize that loving each other and being loved is what matters. So being kind to each other (even when you don't feel like it) is truly a better plan than being mean. So, if I were in charge of the world (yours, Daniel's and Elisabeth's) I would make sure that you would be hurt by anyone again and I would definitely protect Isaiah, Logan and Madeline from ANYTHING hurting them. It's great that Maddie is enjoying real food so much given that she has a daddy ready, willing and very able to cook for her! How fun will that be. One of these days, he will be asking you both what you want for dinner and it will be interesting to see if he cooks you both your own meal!! How could he say NO to either of you? Katie came in my office a little while ago and saw the picture of Maddie (wallet size) that you sent in Jer's Father's Day card and she went crazy!! She wants to know if you would have one of those for her!! She'd love to raise another one just NOT go through the pregnancy. Love you and take care - MOM

I think your point of view is really well written and probably shared by many mom's of grown children. In one of those Anne Lamott books that I read while in Idaho, she said that "if you feel like being loved, do something loving for someone else." I thought this was the smartest thing I've ever read.
Maddie is a major foodie and she doesn't even know it :) She's just so easy about eating-it used to be one of my biggest worries.
As for the picture for Katie, I think I do have one and I'll send it to you in San Jose.

Me again - it might be well written but I didn't make it clear what Katie was asking for!! She wants a BABY GIRL just like Maddie - not a picture!! The real thing - without the pregnancy, labor, etc.:)

Oops, that's funny. Gotta love miscommunication :) Tell Katie, sorry, but there's only one Madderoni!

Sarah: I enjoyed reading your thoughts. I have a funny feeling that most loving mothers don't stop worrying about their children at any age - though it changes. All the difficult things I have gone through I do not want Kenny and Bryan to experience even "a little of those things". I am always hopeful that their futures will be happy ones. If they do have unhappy times, we will be there for them...

Enjoy this time with Maddie as it goes by so fast. She is eating scrambled eggs - that is great. Tell Gabe to hold off on adding onions and hot sauce!

Love to you and your family,

Aunt Susan aka "Sammie"
